Thailand Tourist Visa, METV and Retirement Visa Help: New Options After the 30-Day Visa Exemption Change

Thailand is moving from the 60-day visa exemption back toward a shorter 30-day visa exemption system. For many travellers, that means proper Thailand visa planning is now more important than before.

Thai DTV Visa has mainly focused on the Destination Thailand Visa, also known as the DTV Visa. It remains one of the best long-term options for remote workers, freelancers, digital nomads, soft power applicants and eligible family members.

But not everyone needs a 5-year multiple-entry visa. Some people only need a shorter stay, a simple tourist visa, several tourist entries within a few months, or a retirement-based solution. Because of this, we are expanding our Thailand visa assistance services.

We can now assist with Thailand Tourist Visa (TR), Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV), and Thailand Retirement Visa applications, in addition to our existing DTV Visa support.

Quick summary: which Thailand visa may fit you?

  • TR Tourist Visa: for a longer holiday or temporary stay when 30 days is not enough.
  • METV: for people who want to enter Thailand several times during a longer travel period.
  • Retirement Visa: for applicants aged 50 or older who meet retirement and financial requirements.
  • DTV Visa: for eligible remote workers, freelancers, soft power applicants and families who need a longer, more flexible solution.

Why the 30-day visa exemption change matters

The 60-day visa exemption gave many travellers more flexibility. It allowed people from many countries to stay longer without applying for a visa before arrival. With Thailand moving back toward a 30-day exemption system, short tourist entries may become less convenient for people who want to stay longer than a normal holiday.

A 30-day visa exemption may still be fine for a short trip, but it can create problems for people who want to spend 2-3 months in Thailand, visit family, stay for the winter season, travel in and out, or avoid constant immigration stress.

That is why many visitors should now compare Thailand visa options before travelling. Applying for the correct visa in advance can often be easier than trying to solve everything after arrival.

Thailand Tourist Visa (TR): a simple option when 30 days is not enough

The Thailand Tourist Visa, often called the TR Visa, is a standard tourist visa for people who want to visit Thailand for tourism, holidays, family visits, or a temporary stay that is longer than a visa exemption.

In many cases, a single-entry tourist visa allows an initial stay of up to 60 days. It may also be possible to apply for a 30-day extension at Thai immigration, subject to approval. This means the TR Tourist Visa can be a practical solution for people who want to stay around 60-90 days without needing a long-term visa like the DTV.

Who is the TR Tourist Visa suitable for?

  • Tourists who want more than 30 days in Thailand
  • People planning a 2-3 month stay
  • Travellers visiting family or friends
  • People who do not need a 5-year DTV Visa
  • Visitors who want a more organised entry than relying only on visa exemption

How we can help with the TR Tourist Visa

We can help you understand whether the tourist visa is suitable, prepare the document checklist, review your travel plan, organise supporting documents and guide you through the correct application route.

Thailand METV: Multiple Entry Tourist Visa for frequent visitors

The Thailand Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, commonly called METV, is designed for travellers who want to enter Thailand multiple times during the visa validity period. It can be useful for people who travel around Asia, leave and re-enter Thailand, or want more flexibility than a single-entry tourist visa.

The METV is often issued with a validity period of up to 6 months. Each entry may allow a stay of up to 60 days, depending on the immigration stamp and entry conditions. This makes it useful for frequent visitors who are still travelling as tourists and do not need DTV, retirement or work-related visa status.

Who is the METV suitable for?

  • Frequent Thailand visitors
  • People travelling in and out of Thailand during a longer Asia trip
  • Seasonal visitors who do not need a DTV Visa
  • Tourists who want multiple entries instead of one single stay
  • Applicants who can provide stronger tourist visa documents

Important METV note

The METV is still a tourist visa. It is not a work visa, and it is not designed for local employment in Thailand. Requirements may be stricter than a single-entry TR visa, and applicants should prepare clear financial, travel and accommodation evidence.

Thailand Retirement Visa: for applicants aged 50 or older

The Thailand Retirement Visa route may be suitable for foreigners aged 50 or older who want to stay in Thailand based on retirement. This is a different solution from the DTV Visa and tourist visas, because it is based on age, purpose of stay and financial eligibility.

Retirement visa planning can involve several possible routes, including Non-Immigrant O retirement-based applications, in-country extensions, or other retirement-related options depending on nationality, current location and document situation.

Common retirement visa conditions

Requirements can vary by route and embassy, but retirement applicants commonly need to show:

  • Age 50 or older
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of retirement purpose
  • Financial evidence, often based on Thai bank funds, monthly income, or a combination route
  • Address or accommodation information in Thailand
  • Required forms, photos and supporting documents
  • Health insurance or medical-related documents where required by the selected visa route

Many retirement cases involve financial planning, timing and document preparation. For example, some routes may require money to be in a Thai bank account for a certain period before extension. Because of this, it is important to plan before the current stay expires.

Who is the Retirement Visa suitable for?

  • Applicants aged 50+
  • People who want to live in Thailand based on retirement
  • Long-term residents who do not need remote work status
  • Applicants who can meet the required financial conditions
  • People who want a more stable long-stay route than tourist entries

DTV Visa is still the best option for many long-term visitors

Even though we now assist with TR, METV and retirement routes, the DTV Visa remains a strong option for people who qualify. If you work remotely, freelance for clients outside Thailand, own an online business, join eligible Thai soft power activities, or want family dependants connected to a DTV holder, the DTV may still be the better long-term solution.

The key is choosing the right visa for your real situation. A tourist visa should be used for tourism. A retirement visa should be used for retirement. A DTV Visa should be used when you genuinely fit the DTV route. Choosing the wrong visa can create problems later.
